On my last post. The black NSX is definitely a repost of another one that's about twice the price and actually located in KY.

My old man is getting a C5 this summer. He hits the magic age of 50 this year so he thinks it's about time. We may go on some cruises or hit the track every now and then. If you had $10k to spend on something sporty with a manual transmission what would you pick? I'm open to all suggestions.

Probably a C4 Corvette, Since they're pretty cheap to repair.

S2000. Killer looks, amazing reliability, massive fun.

C5 Vette or LS1 Trans Am WS6.

That's honestly what I've been thinking. I want one with the Grand Sport paint job.

Hmmm probably an S2000 if you can find one that cheap if not a miata.

190E 16Vs pop up every once in a while, but in the past few years they have been stupidly overpriced (still under 10K, though).

GTV6's are common around that price point, but not for long

Fan of muscle? I have seen quite a few 1970-73 AMC Javelins for that price, most with the 390 instead of the 401.

Miata, duh.

350Zs are common for less than 10K

05-06 Pontiac GTOs are as well (and your best hp per dollar by far). Yea they're ugly, but so what?

Plenty of BMW choices, 528i to 318i to maybe even an older M3 or E30

All I can think of for now, any of them sound good?

Don't want a C5. That's the old man's car. Now that Trans Am on the otherhand... that' actually a great suggestion. I used to be all Mustang all the time but I have come to appreciate the GM products as I've gotten older.

Really nice Miata, or AP1 S2000, Gen 1 or 2 MR2, or possibly a Gen 1 Mazdaspeed3 would be what I'd be looking at.

Volvo V70R. It's the perfect mix of form, function, and fun. It's also a sleeper wagon so...

If you get one with the T56 six speed the only weak point will be the rear axle. Plus whatever you learn on the Vette/TA engine will transfer between chassis.

If I'm spending $10k it won't be a Miata. But if I got one in good shape at a reasonable price I'd have a nice stash left over for mods.

My high school girlfriend hated convertibles, My mom let me drive hers sometimes and the GF would complain the whole time she was in it. She had really long hair and it whipped her face, I bought her a hat, she still whined.

If you get him a Grand Sport you've got to go for the real deal though! Those things are usually $13,000 on the cheap side though.

I saw one of these at a race I was at, in the parking lot. If I was going for a C4, it'd be the one I want.

Either that, or one of these -

Kinja'd!!!

My dad got one as his midlife crisis mobile. 2002 Special Edition. For 10k he could get a really nice one. JUST LOOK AT THE INTERIOR. (Google picture, with aftermarket rollbars)

Kinja'd!!!

The closest thing I can compare the color of the seats to is baseball glove leather. Or a really expensive football.

I'm looking for something that is still reliable so nothing that's too old. That GTO sounds like a great option, didn't even cross my mind. I love BMWs but prices for parts seem to equal death. I do have a weak spot for E28s for some reason.

The rear in the 82+ F-bodies is based of the Vega's rear, so it's undersized for the power. Many people have no issues but scattering the 10 bolt during a hard launch is not unheard of.

You would have to upgrade it to a stronger rear. 12 bolt, 9", S60.

That's not bad at all. Honestly I would love to get on in lovely condition like that but I'll take one that's not as pristine simply because it will immediately be modded. I've recently come to have a thing for NBs for some reason. I guess it's because there are more of these in better condition than NAs

That's a very good concern... $5k every 120k miles? Clutch, angle gear collar, timing belt, struts, and consumables.

Do you have the 5.7 or the 6.0? I'm really thinking heavy about this one.

01/13/2015 at 21:35

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeaaaa that's definitely no fun. And that's just the scheduled maintenance. What if something randomly breaks? Well that's why I have my Saturn as a back up car but still spending that kind of scratch just on maintenance is not what I call fun.

Kinja'd!!! BorkBorkBjork > SlickMcRick

6.0, and I did put a blower on it, bringing it to 483 rwhp.

The engines are reliable and easily upgradeable, the transmission is also bulletproof (unless abused by a previous owner). The driveshaft is shit, but BMR makes an excellent replacement though.

You my good man have a rather convincing argument upon your hands. A sound vehicle that also has room for two others in the back seat for emergency situations.... We may have a winner on our hands.

Kinja'd!!! BorkBorkBjork > SlickMcRick

I am 6' 6", and I fit in the back seat comfortably (even with a tall driver), no need to reserve it for emergencies.

Well you would need to add a SC, or turbo.

I prefer the swoopy FD RX7-esque shape to the soap bar NA's. It also helps that my first car was an NB. The 1.8 has a bit more power than the 1.6 as well, which is nice.

Kinja'd!!! 44444444444 > SlickMcRick
01/13/2015 at 22:19

Kinja'd!!!0

That's unscheduled maintenance as well.

It's $120 for the angle gear collar, $1200 for struts, $400 for the clutch, and $250 for the timing belt. In retrospect $5k was a little generous. But it should cover tires, brakes, etc...

Usually not less than $15,000 for a black interior coupe with high miles. The red interior versions command significantly more, and at that point you to consider whether you really want the Grand Sport, or if you'd rather have either a C4 ZR-1 or a C5 Z06. If you are looking at the top end Grand Sports, it starts competing with the C6 Z06.

Find a '94 or '95 in Admiral Blue Metallic with a manual, buy the stripes for $400. Profit. The stripes were decals even on the real thing, if I recall.

Won't have the LT4, though. Don't let "experts" fool you, the LT4 feels notably peppier than the LT1.
